From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.
During the toughest times of my life - losing both parents - Dot at Wellens was my rock. From the outset she guided me through my dads funeral arrangements in 2019 and as an only child she went over and above to help me before and after the funeral. 7 years later In January 2026 I lost my mum. Dot remembered the surname and immediately made contact with me to assure me she would, again, be with me every step of the way. I cannot recommend Wellens highly enough. Thank you Dot you are an amazing woman, an asset to Wellens xx love Maria xxx

I am deeply grateful for Wellens Middleton, in particular Dot who listened to what we wanted and arranged everything with no fuss. Whenever we visited, we were greeted with a friendly smile and welcoming manner by the receptionist, so sorry do not know her name. Anthony called the day before the funeral to arrange pick up time and he and the team were very professiinal and respectful on the day. Would definitely recommend Wellens Middleton.
Very freindley , people in wellens , i was happy with all dad's farewell service , and cremation , they explained everything well
